Emmanuel Despax is an internationally acclaimed pianist whose career spans major concert halls and orchestras across Europe, Asia, Australia and South America. Known for his interpretations of the Romantic and post-Romantic repertoire, he has established himself as a distinctive voice of his generation.
Despax has performed at Wigmore Hall and Cadogan Hall in London, the Royal Concert Hall Nottingham, the Louvre Auditorium, Salle Cortot and Salle Gaveau in Paris, the Palais des Beaux-Arts in Brussels, the Fazioli Concert Hall in Italy and the Pharos Arts Foundation in Cyprus. His orchestral collaborations include the BBC Symphony Orchestra, City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra, BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra and Christchurch Symphony Orchestra.
Recent international engagements have taken him on a month-long tour of China, Japan and Australia, with performances of Chopin in solo recital and concerto programmes alongside Rachmaninov’s Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini. The tour culminated at the Joan Sutherland Performing Arts Centre in Sydney, where Limelight described him as “without a doubt, one of the finest Chopin interpreters today”.
His discography with Signum Classics reflects his longstanding affinity with the Romantic repertoire, among them Brahms’s Piano Concerto No. 1 with the BBC Symphony Orchestra and Andrew Litton; Chopin’s piano concertos with the Chineke! Chamber Ensemble; Après un rêve, a programme of French repertoire named Album of the Week by both Classic FM and The Times and awarded five stars by BBC Music Magazine; and his 2024 recording of Liszt’s piano works, praised by BBC Music Magazine for its “powerful, velvety touch” and by BBC Record Review as “a tremendously ambitious take”.
For his next recording, Despax turns to Schubert’s Wanderer Fantasy and the theme of the journey, alongside works by Janáček and Lili Boulanger. The album will be released by Signum Classics in spring 2027.
Alongside his solo career, Despax’s chamber collaborations have included the Piatti Quartet and the Bechstein Trio. His work with the Piatti Quartet resulted in the 2025 Signum Classics recording Resonance, bringing together music by Louise Farrenc, Robert Schumann and Lucien Durosoir, with a world-premiere recording of Farrenc’s Piano Quintet in C minor. The album was selected by Gramophone as one of its “five unmissable new classical albums of the week”.
Emmanuel Despax appears frequently on BBC Radio 3, France Musique, Classic FM and Medici TV. He has presented BBC Radio 3’s Inside Music and Rethinking Liszt, an in-depth filmed conversation with broadcaster Petroc Trelawny exploring the composer’s music, interpretation and the ideas behind Despax’s Liszt recording.
Born in Paris and now based in London, Despax began playing the piano in Aix-en-Provence before joining the Yehudi Menuhin School and subsequently the Royal College of Music in London, where he studied with Ruth Nye, one of Claudio Arrau’s closest pupils. During his studies he received the Chappell Medal and Tagore Gold Medal, and benefited from the advice of Nikolai Demidenko, Leon Fleisher, Yehudi Menuhin, Dominique Merlet, Mstislav Rostropovich, Murray Perahia and András Schiff.
